Where can I safely buy a used scooter or motorcycle in Phuket?
Used bikes are sold on Facebook Marketplace and in Phuket buy-and-sell groups, by private owners and by dealers. The channel itself guarantees nothing: the real risks sit in the individual bike — an unpaid loan ("in finance"), frame or engine numbers that don't match the book, years of unpaid road tax, hidden crash damage, a past as a rental bike. So check both the papers and the bike before you pay a deposit. I find and inspect bikes against 149 checkpoints: in Phuket from ฿3,500 for a scooter and from ฿5,000 for a motorcycle.
How much does scooter or motorcycle sourcing cost?
In Phuket: from ฿3,500 for a scooter and from ฿5,000 for a motorcycle. Anywhere in Thailand: ฿5,000–6,000 for a scooter and ฿7,000–10,000 for a motorcycle, because it is a full day on the road. The fee is fixed and does not depend on the price of the bike you end up buying. Government fees and registration are paid separately.
What should I check before buying a used scooter in Thailand?
Papers first: the registration book (blue book) must match the frame and engine numbers, the bike must not be under a loan, and road tax must not be years behind. Then the bike itself: crash and respray marks, frame and forks, the CVT, electrics, brakes and tyres. The year in the book is the registration year, not the year of manufacture. My checklist has 149 items, each marked either "stop" or "negotiate".
Can a foreigner buy a scooter and register it in their own name?
Yes. To register in your own name you need a passport with a valid visa and a Certificate of Residence from Immigration (it takes a few working days), or a valid work permit. I handle the whole process: registration from ฿2,500, government fees paid separately.
What does "in finance" mean, and can I buy such a bike?
It means the bike is still under a loan and the registration book is held by the finance company. It is solvable: the remaining debt is paid off, then the finance company releases the book to the new owner. Before any deposit, find out the exact balance and who is paying it off. Is there a Carfax-style history check in Thailand?
No. There is no Carfax equivalent and no public database of total-loss vehicles in Thailand. The history has to be pieced together by hand: the papers, the numbers, repair traces on the bike itself, and a conversation with the seller. That is exactly what my inspection covers.
How long does it take?
Usually two days to a week, depending on how rare the model is and what the market looks like.

Do you work outside Phuket?
